The City of Miami Commission,
at their January 25th, 1978 meeting passed a resolution naming the Camping and
Picnic Grounds located at Flagler street and NW 70th avenue in Miami the
"Carlos J. Arboleya Camping and Picnic Grounds", in recognition
of his dedication and efforts in the preservation of the park for the use
of the community's youth.
Carlos led
a one-man campaign against a group that wanted the camping grounds
converted into a velodrome. The City of Miami does not have many camping
facilities within the city, he quickly recruited support of the many civic
organizations, which use the park, among which of course, were the boy and girl scouts. He wrote hundreds
of letters, compiled statistics, appeared many times before commission
meetings on this matter, and finally won his fight, not only in preserving
the grounds but in providing and having the City of Miami Commission
agree to build the velodrome in an unusual area of the city which now has
little use, everyone gaining by his efforts and leadership; as a result,
the park now bears his name, and on March 4th, 1978, the City of Miami held
the official inaugural celebration of these camping facilities named after
him.
The
Lincoln-Marti Camporee was founded by Carlos J. Arboleya and designed to
bring together the newly arrived Cuban boys and the South Florida Council's
scouts.
The first
Camporee was in 1971 with approximately 150 boys in attendance, today, the
attendance exceeds 4000, having become a Camporee of International flavor
with troops from Colombia, Chile, Salvador, Nicaragua, Argentina
participating.
The
Camporee is held annually in the month of January in the Carlos J. Arboleya
Camping and Picnic Grounds. The park has 14 acres completely fenced in with
locked gates at night. It is use for camping by Boys and Girls Scouts and athlete
supervised youth groups, during the year and for family, community, and
civic associations picnics.
It is
operated by the City of Miami Park and Recreational Department; for information
call or write to park manager Yudenia Gallardo, at park address or
telephone (305) 261-6151.
